I’m already a winner – twice over!

So, there’s a great competition to assist aspiring traditional or cozy mystery writers on their journey towards publication. It’s called the William F. Deeck-Malice Domestic Grants Program for Unpublished Writers.  I entered the first three chapters of my work-in-progress, “Home Fires Burning,” and just double-checked that they arrived safely before the November 1st deadline. They did. Now I sit back and wait until next March, when they will notify applicants of “the status of their submission.”

I would love to win. The recognition and opportunity provided by this grant would be wonderful. And they present the award at the annual Malice Domestic conference, which I’ve wanted to attend for years.

But the Malice Grant program has already achieved its purpose and helped this writer along her journey. First, it gave me a goal and a deadline. That helped me focus and carve out the time I needed to write. (“Gosh, I wish I could pitch in/fix that/take charge, but I have this writing deadline…”)

And second, it made me realize — duh, I can attend Malice Domestic whether I win or not! My husband retired this year, we have the time open, our son goes to grad school nearby and we could visit — why not? Go for it!

I registered a few minutes ago.

If I should win, it would be a sign to agents that my mystery might be worth a look. And the grant money would allow me to attend another conference, which would further help me network and learn. It would be huge. Still, right now, days before the deadline,  I’m already a winner.  Twice over.

Thank you, Malice Grants!
